Written by Jwelch Firstly this is not your average Spielberg movie, it's more of a feel good family movie. The reason people hate this movie is because they are comparing it to a proper Spielberg movie. I think Spielberg was trying to do something different this time for kid viewers. My family loved this movie and if you hated this movie while you're reading this, just give it another try.

Lot's of people think this is very immature because of it's fart jokes, I was counting how many fart jokes there were surprisingly there were only four in the entire movie. The director has had a few bad movies recently Indiana Jones and the kingdom of the Krystal Skull etc. Basically what I'm trying to say is that this is a good movie and it is too much hate. Sign In. With the newly released movie The BFGI decided to reread this old classic and then go to see the movie with the intention of comparing the two versions. I am glad I did, for it was an excellent refresher of the story and a fun movie to watch.

And except for Sophie, who is lying awake in the orphanage dormitory, everyone is asleep. She peers out through a gap in the curtains. Who does she see? The BFG, of course. This is not a safe course of action for the BFG or Sophie.

The BFG might be a vegetarian he only eats snozzcumbersbut the other giants who live in giant country certainly are not. And the BFG is the runt among the giants. He usually is more interested in catching dreams than in catching humans.

He catches the dreams because he can hear them with his marvelous, truly sensitive, overly large ears. Really, the BFG is just an old softie.

However, the nine other giants — pleasantly named things like Bloodbottler and Fleshlumpeater — are going on a rampage soon and will be eating up all kinds of innocent school children. Sophie knows they must be stopped.

There are so many made-up words that it can be a real tongue-twister, which is the reason I preferred other Dahl stories over this one.

I did enjoy the movie version pretty well — maybe even a little better than the book. It sticks relatively close to the book though there are some variations in the plot. The giants in the movie are definitely more menacing. The whizzpopper scene with the Queen and her dogs those who have seen the movie will know what I mean is a bit more built up in the movie version, and I have no doubt it is one of the favorite parts among the younger audience.

It seemed fresh and modern, and they made the BFG into a truly lovable giant. You are commenting using your WordPress. You are commenting using your Google account.

Email required Address never made public.Based on the novel of the same name by Roald Dahl. It was directed by Brian Cosgrove and written by John Hambley. The film was dedicated to animator George Jacksonwho had worked on numerous Cosgrove Hall productions prior to his death in This film is also the last and posthumous role of Ballard Berkeley voice of the Head of the Armywho died in Sophie is a young orphaned girl living in the orphanage of the cantankerous and abusive Mrs.

One night, Sophie wakes up and goes to look through the window but sees a cloaked giant blowing something through a trumpet into a bedroom window down the street; whereupon the giant notices her and snatches her to the realm of Giant Country.

In his cave, the giant identifies himself as the Big Friendly Giant the BFG for short who blows dreams into the bedrooms of children at night, while all the other 9 giants are vicious, child-eating beasts. Because the BFG refuses to eat people or steal food from humans, he subsists on a revolting vegetable known as a "Snozzcumber", which is all that grows in Giant Country. He explains that he took her so she couldn't tell anyone that she had seen him and start a giant hunt.

Sophie and BFG quickly become friends; but Sophie is soon put in danger by the sudden arrival of the Bloodbottler Giant, who suspects BFG of harbouring a human after hearing him talking. BFG tricks the Bloodbottler into eating the Snozzcumber to repel him from his cave, during which Sophie is almost eaten.

BFG makes her a new dress out of her blanket to replace her ruined nightgown. When Sophie announces she is thirsty, BFG treats her to a delicious fizzy drink called "Frobscottle", whose bubbles go downwards, which causes the drinker to flatulate ; this is known as a "whizzpopper" to giants, and causes the drinker to soar and shoot around the place.

The next morning, BFG takes Sophie to Dream Country to catch more dreams, but they are first tormented by the other giants along the way; notably by the Fleshlumpeater Giant, who is the largest and most fearsome and hideous.

Upon arriving at his Dream Cave, BFG shows Sophie all the dreams he has captured already and locks away the nightmare in his cavern of lava in a tiny chest, and takes Sophie to watch him on his dream-blowing duties; but this is cut short when they spot the Fleshlumpeater about to eat a little boy whom BFG had previously given a pleasant dream.

Afterwards, the grief-stricken Sophie tries to persuade BFG to stop the evil giants. At first, BFG is reluctant to do so out of cowardliness and low trust in humans; but Sophie develops a plan to expose the evil giants to the Queen of the United Kingdom.

Using dreams from his collection, BFG creates a nightmare, blows it into the Queen's bedroom, leaves Sophie on the Queen's windowsill to confirm the dream and retreats into the palace gardens when Sophie calls him. Because the dream included foreknowledge of Sophie's presence, the Queen believes her story, and speaks with BFG.

After considerable effort by the palace staff, BFG is given a copious breakfast. Once ready, the army and the airforce, in a fleet of RAF Chinook helicoptersfollow BFG to Giant Country to the 9 giants' homeland, where the giants are tied up and taken prisoner. The only one that is not there is the Fleshlumpeater, who immediately attacks BFG for his betrayal and later pursues Sophie when she intervenes; but after a long chase he is stopped when BFG subdues him with the nightmare he had captured earlier, which he later reveals was a nightmare about Jack and the Beanstalkboth of which all giants, including BFG himself, fear.

The tethered giants are then all transported by the helicopters to London, where they are imprisoned in a deep metal pit and forced to eat Snozzcumbers for the rest of their lives.

The orphanage is closed down so the children move into the palace and Mrs. Clonkers is given the job of feeding giants. Contrary to the book's ending, BFG stays in Giant Country instead of moving to England, and Sophie becomes his assistant at the distribution of dreams and people think they will visit Buckingham Palace sometimes.

Cosgrove also produced the film along with Mark Hallwhile John Hambleywho also executive produced the film, scripted the film after Brian Trueman 's initial draft was rejected. Development of the film can be traced as far back aswhen only 5 people, including Cosgrove, were working on the film before being joined by other crew members. According to Brian Cosgrovethe director and producer of the film, Roald Dahl was very supportive to the studio in production.

I painted a watercolour of how we saw him. I got a lovely note back from Dahl saying it was perfect, he was right behind it, and to just get on and do it.

Sophie, the little girl who befriends the BFG, was easy. I had read that Dahl based her on his granddaughter, Sophie Dahl. At the time she wore John Lennon glasses, so we took it from there. During production of the film, which took over 3 years, cels were used against watercolour backgrounds designed by a team led by DC Thomson cartoonist John Geering.

The film also used the animation photo transfer process just like Walt Disney Animation Studios did with their feature film The Black Cauldron. Following its release, various children's books based on the film were published, one being a short narrative that featured printed still-shots of scenes from the film.

However, two pages consisted of some from a scene which was not featured in the final cut.

The book is dedicated to Dahl's late daughter, Olivia, who died of measles encephalitis at the age of seven in It has also been adapted as a theatre performance.

The book starts with a young girl named Sophie lying in bed in an orphanage after her parents died when she was a baby. She can't sleep, and sees a strange sight in the street; a giant man, carrying a bag and an odd trumpet. He sees Sophie, who tries to hide in bed, but the giant picks her up through the window. Then he runs incredibly fast to a large cavewhich he enters. When he sets Sophie down, she begins to plead for her life, believing that the giant will eat her. The giant laughs, and explains that most giants do eat human beings, and that the people's origins affect their taste.

For example, people from Greece taste greasy, while people from Panama taste of hats. The BFG explains that she must stay with him forever, as no one can know of his existence. He warns her of the dangers of leaving his caveas his nine neighbours are sure to eat her if they catch her. He explains what he was doing with the trumpet and suitcase. He catches dreams, stores them in the cave, and then gives the good ones to children all around the world. He destroys the bad ones.

The BFG then explains that he eats the only edible plant that will grow in the giants' homeland: snozzcumbers, which are disgusting striped warty cucumber -like vegetables with wart-like growths that taste like frog skins and rotten fish to Sophie and cockroaches and slime wanglers to the BFG.

Another giant, the Bloodbottler, then storms in. Sophie hides in a snozzcumber and is nearly accidentally eaten by the Bloodbottler. Bloodbottler luckily spits her out and then leaves in disgust. When Sophie announces she is thirsty, the BFG treats her to a fizzy soda pop drink called "frobscottle" which causes noisy flatulence because of the bubbles sinking downwards. The BFG calls this "Whizzpopping". The next morning, the BFG takes Sophie to Dream Country to catch more dreams, but is tormented by the man-eating giants along the way, notably by their leader the Fleshlumpeater, the largest and most fearsome of the giants.

In Dream Country, the BFG demonstrates his dream-catching skills to Sophie; but the BFG mistakenly captures a nightmare and uses it to start a fight among the other giants when Fleshlumpeater has a nightmare about Jack. Sophie later persuades him to approach the Queen of England about imprisoning the other giants. To this end, she uses her knowledge of London to navigate the BFG to Buckingham Palaceand the BFG creates a nightmare for the Queen, which describes the man-eating giants, and leaves Sophie in the Queen's bedroom to confirm it.

Because the dream included the knowledge of Sophie's presence, the Queen believes her and speaks with the BFG. The BFG is lowered in to untie them; untying Fleshlumpeater last, he explains why they are being imprisoned. Outraged, Fleshlumpeater roars that they'll devour the BFG instead, but he is hoisted out to safety. The man-eating giants find themselves being only fed snozzcumbers though there is one incident later where three drunken men climb over the fence surrounding the pit, fall in, and are eaten.

Afterwards, a huge castle is built as the BFG's new house, with a little cottage next door for Sophie. While they are living happily in Englandgifts come from the governments of every country ever targeted by the giants notably EnglandSwedenArabiaIndiaPanamaTibetJerseyChileand New Zealand. After Sophie teaches the BFG how to read and proper English, he writes a book of their adventures identified as the novel itself —under the name "Roald Dahl".

The ending is almost the same as James and the Giant Peachwhen he writes a story about himself, by himself. Also, Mr. Tibbs relates to Mrs. Tibbs, the friend of Mr. Gilligrass, the U.The ideal age for it is somewhere between five and nine—a time when kids ask basic, very practical questions about the stories adults tell them at bedtime, like "Are Sophie's glasses OK?

The BFG is indeed friendly—befuddled and a bit sad, but nice. But there are other giants here. They're scary, stupid bullies, and so big that they tower over the BFG the way he towers over Sophie.

They love to eat people, whom they call "human beans," or simply "beans. He does it so that the bigger giants won't see them and know for sure that he's hiding a child, but there's a more basic motivation: to prevent them from getting crushed.

The movie is filled with gestures that meaningful. Like the BFG, it cares about the little things, and it moves with a grace that belies its size. It's a film about about dreaming and storytelling, parenting and childhood, nostalgia and pragmatism, and the necessity of standing up for yourself even when you know you can't win. But most of all, it's a film about two unlikely friends. There's a little bit of plot, mostly having to do with how the BFG will deal with the really big giants who scare him and call him "runt"; this stuff resolves itself so quickly that it's as if the story realized it was getting late and the kids needed to get to sleep.

The movie is less interested in twists and turns than in watching the giant and Sophie interact. It's the kind of film that pauses to let characters tell each other stories and that recounts a dream by throwing shadows upon a wall.

There are fart jokes, but unlike most movie fart jokes, they're not crudely desperate.

Book vs. Movie: The BFG

They're joyously strange in that Roald Dahl way, and they don't just happen when a scene needs, well, gas; the movie builds toward them patiently, the better to keep kids on the edge of their chairs waiting for that first flap-flap sound. I can imagine a some adults finding the movie dull; "Nothing happens," they'll say. The giant keeps dreams in jars.

Some are good dreams. Others are scary. The giant doesn't want Sophie to experience the scary dreams, not because there are monsters in them though sometimes there are but because they say hurtful things to the dreamer.

App store iddaa

The giant can be lyrical and inspiring, especially when he talks about how he loves the land and tries to listen to it. The movie is never too exact about its meanings; they're fluid, changing to reflect a given situation. That means the giant can be an adult who has brought a child into his world and is scared she might die because of something he did, or failed to do. But he can also be a child who lets himself be mothered by Sophie, a kid who was forced to grow up too fast.

From a distance, the shambling, silver-haired BFG often suggests a doting but scatterbrained grandfather. The bigger giants in the land of the giants stalk around like irresponsible, petty, volatile parents who have no idea how to give or accept love because they never learned how. The BFG tells Sophie that giants don't have parents. Most scenes in "The BFG" take their time unfolding. Many consist of Sophie and the BFG talking as real friends might.
